Safety

Safety is core to everything we do at Chief

Chief maintains an intensive, detailed and effective safety and maintenance programs ensuring we employ the safest drivers and vehicles on our roads and highways. In particular we adhere to Canada’s National Safety Code containing a set of a minimum of 17 safety standards.

Our maintenance schedules help to ensure our equipment is up to standard and vehicles are inspected every day to ensure they are fit for the road.

Our drivers take advantage of the professional driver improvement courses offered in-house as well as by various trucking associations. Our drivers also benefit from programs that focus on developing attitudes that ensure safe driving.

Safety on the Job
Chief works closely with and adheres to applicable guidelines and programs monitored by the WHMIS and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations. The focus of WHMIS and the TDG is on the safe shipment of dangerous goods, ensuring all organizations adhere to and implement the proper emergency prepardness planning.

Chief employees participate in the Petroleum Safety Training course to meet IRP 16 standards, as well as the H2S Alive Safety Training. These courses provide information on the properties of Hydrogen Sulphide, initial response strategy requirements, respiratory protective equipment, Hydrogen Sulphide detection equipment, rescue techniques and rescue breathing, case study scenarios, legislated requirements, and any additional information the instructor feels pertinent to working in possible Hydrogen Sulphide environments. The WHMIS, TDG, PST and H2S courses are mandatory for Chief employees and are offered in-house.

Emergency Preparedness
No matter how much we prepare, accidents do happen. Chief's emergency preparedness planning and training programs ensure our employees know what to do in case of an incident. These plans are continuously updated and revisited to ensure we do everything we can to contain an incident.

Authorized Vehicle Inspections
The Calgary and Fort McMurray offices employ authorized personnel who can conduct vehicle inspections.

Sustainable Development
Chief has a simply stated goal — to do no damage to the environment. This challenge stimulates us to find innovative ways to manage our environmental impact at local, regional and global levels. We believe we have made considerable progress towards this goal.
